Voice Your Support for House File 128, The Bicycle Bill. It's Not too Late!

Not long ago, we shared information a bicycle ride that was heading toward the state capital to show support for Senate File 117, a bill that would increase safety measures for bicyclists. Some are terming the bill a “bicyclist’s bill of rights.” Currently, the bill is still making its way through the Iowa House of Representatives as House File 128. Many cycling organizations and communities are still asking Iowans to contact their representatives and voice their support for the bill. This is especially true as another bicycling accident made the news today about a Polk County Sherriff’s Office employee who was badly injured while riding alongside traffic. The employee, Leesa Shoemaker, was badly injured when a passing vehicle failed to overtake her bicycle properly. This is the kind of accident that the bicycle bill is meant to prevent. Shoemaker spent a number of days in the hospital before being released, and is just another victim in a series of bicycle and automated vehicle accidents that prompted the bill’s creation.

It is not too late to voice your support. You can email the following or use the information below to contact the legislature:

Iowa State Bridges Among Worst in Nation

A Washington-based non-profit transportation research group (TRIP) has determined that 622 Iowa bridges are one point away from being structurally decifient. Among the worst in the state are two Sioux City bridges. According to TRIP, 21% of of the stae bridges are deficient with another 6% qualifying as functionally obsolete. Repairing or replacing the defective bridges would cost the state roughly $257 million per year. There are only three other states ranked worse than Iowa in the study.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley

Missouri Proposes Helmet Legislation

Missouri currently has a law requiring helmets for all riders, however, the proposed Senate bill 1067 would allow riders age 21 or older to make the decision of whether or not to wear a helmet. Helmets would remain mandatory for highway riding. If the bill passes, Missouri will be the 31st state to pass age-related legislation regarding motorcycle helmets. There are currently five bills in the house and senate dealing with motorcycle safety.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley

Nebraska Kills Helmet Law Repeal Bill

Across the river, efforts to repeal the Nebraska mandatory helmet law (LB 253) have failed. The proposed bill offered a partial repeal to the current law. The proposal would have required bikers under 21 to wear helmets but would have allowed older riders to go without a helmet if they had passed an approved safety course. Iowa is one of only three states with no helmet requirement.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley

A source on the scene said that only one motorcycle was involved.

Authorities closed Cherry Road to traffic at Walnut Street, the Richland/Richlandtown border. Firefighters redirected cars and trucks at Cherry Road's intersection with California Road in Richland.

From the Walnut Street stop point, emergency vehicle lights could be seen flashing beyond a bend on Cherry Road, lighting up stretch of a roadway that winds through Richlandtown into a more rural area of Richland.

The police are still investigating the accident and no more information is available. The Missouri Valley man was trying to get something from the passenger side of the car just before hitting the parked car.

The victim's
vehicle then went to the left across two lane of traffic and came to a stop in the median.
He was transported to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, by Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue, where he was, reports said, treated for facial lacerations and a broken neck, then released with a neck brace.

The police wrote him a ticket for failure to maintain control.
Girl on Roller Blades Not Responsible for Bicycle Accident

A fertility doctor sued a young girl the he blamed for causing a bicycle accident. The girl was on roller blades and the doctor was on the bicycle.

The jury found that the girl was not responsible and was probably startled when the doctor rode on his bicycle up behind her, rang his bell and shouted "watch out." The girl then moved to her left and right in front of the doctor.

He broke his collarbone and practice lost business while he was recovering. He was sueing for pain and suffering and the money his practice lost. The jury only took 15 minutes to decide on the verdict.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

The owner of Shoreline Cruises and the Captain of the Ethan Allen were both charged with a criminal misdemeanor over the October 2, 2005 boating accident. 20 people were killed when the boat rolled over on a fall color tour on Lake George in New York.

Warren County District Attorney Kate Hogan said the grand jury also made several legislative recommendations, the specifics of which won't be released until a county court judge accepts the report, she said.

"They were greatly moved by this case," Hogan said of the grand jury. She read a statement from the panel: "This accident was a great tragedy," the statement said. "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and friends."

The boat was loaded with 47 passengers and only one crew member at the time of the accident.
