Chew On This: New Study Says Chewable Aspirin is Best For Heart Health

Often times, heart patients are released from the hospital with instructions to eat better, exercise more, and make lifestyle changes. One of those changes is a daily habit – taking aspirin once a day. Now, a new study released this month indicates that chewable aspirin is better than tablets for heart patients. The study was conducted by the University of California at San Diego, La Jolla. The study focused on chewable aspirin, which is sometimes referred to as “baby aspirin” when indicated as a daily must-have for heart patients. The study had just fourteen participants – one woman and thirteen men. Each was given 1,950 milligrams of aspirin each day, which is the equivalent of about six regular aspirin tablets. However, participants were asked to take the aspirin in different ways when the dose was delivered in a tablet rather than chewable form. One group was asked to swallow aspirin tablets whole while another taking tablets was asked to chew the tablets before swallowing. The third group took chewable aspirin (which is made to be chewed, unlike tablets). Researchers then tested the amount of aspirin in the participant’s blood and found that the group that took chewable aspirin had the drug in their system faster and at a greater rate as compared to those that chewed or swallowed tablets.

It seems that chewing allows the aspirin to enter the body’s system and start working more quickly than tablets. Generally, aspirin works quickly – within 15 minutes. However, this time can be precious as damage to the body can occur quickly during a heart attack. Aspirin helps to prevent clotting, but if you feel like you are experiencing heart troubles at any time, you should seek medical attention immediately. While you’re caring for your heart day-to-day in the meantime, consider chewable aspirin rather than tablets for a little extra benefit.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Sarah Cool

Iowa Pork Producers Assure Consumers: Swine Flu Has Nothing to do with Pork

The unfortunately named “swine flu” virus has dominated headlines across the country. But it was only recently that U.S. governments and agencies renamed the virus H1N1-influenza virus amid concerns that the use of the name “swine” was hurting pork sales. Bill Hall, the acting assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Health & Human Services, explained: “[t]here is no evidence at this time that swine in the United States are infected with this virus strain and therefore, this is not an animal health or food safety issue." In fact, Hall further explained that H1N1 was likely a combination of swine, bird, and human strains that had genetically mutated. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the H1N1 virus is transmitted by swine. Nevertheless, the media attention and in-apt name of the flu when it first emerged on the global scene has led many to avoid pork products.

Worldwide, there have been less than 1,000 confirmed cases of the virus, with only 286 being in the United States according to the World Health Organization. So far, there have been no reported or confirmed cases in Iowa or in its neighboring or nearby states.

According to the CDC and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:

People cannot get the hybrid influenza from eating pork or pork products. Most influenza viruses, including the swine flu virus, are not spread by food. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.

There are no food safety issues related to the hybrid flu that has been identified, according to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Preliminary investigations have determined that none of the people infected with the hybrid flu had contact with hogs.

“This virus is different, very different from that found in pigs.”

The hybrid virus never has been identified in hogs in the United States or anywhere in the world.

The Iowa Grocery Industry Association has recently reported these facts. Additionally, the Iowa Pork Producers Association and National Pork Board have made efforts to reassure consumers that pork is, in fact, safe for consumption and that the H1N1 virus doesn’t originate from eating pork products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Sarah Cool

Are YOUR Measle Vaccinations Current?: Measles Outbreaks are HIGHEST since 2001!

Measles have been reported in about 20% of U.S. states, and in Illinois and Missouri, neighboring states to our fair Iowa, causing State officials some concern.

Measles, a highly contagious disease, cause high fever, coughs, runny noses, watery eyes and a red rash that moves from the face to the whole body.

The solution? Make sure that you and yours are current with your Measle vaccinations. Take the time to make a quick check with your Primary Care Physician and Pediatrician.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley

2008 RAGBRAI ROUTE A GREAT AND TOUGH ONE ACROSS IOWA'S MIDSECTION

The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa is one of the nation's biggest and finest yearly non-competitive statewide rides.

This year's route is both very scenic, and much more hilly, than last years, and most year's

For more information on this yearly fun-filled July event go to their official web site:

From July 20-26, me and 10,000 of my closest friends will be traversing Iowa (only half-way for me this year) as one big, gigantic body of bicycles all in search of great food and drink.

The pain, the weather, the people, the @#$%^& wind, and THE RIDE make it all worth it every year.

Hopefully, Ma Nature will provide a safe week, and the Good Lord will provide a safe event with no accidents or injuries.

6th Annual BIKE-TO-WORK Week set for Iowa from May 10 to May 16

Last year

1,415 cyclists took the pledge to commute at least once to work. That was a 57% increase in participation from the previous year!

448 were 1st time Commuters! That's more than 30% of the total participants!

560 employers and 160 bicycle clubs were represented last year.

Over 11,932 commuting miles were made by bicycle last week. That means 663 gallons of gas were not used and $2048 was saved during Bike To Work Week by not purchasing fuel.

Learn MORE about this year's event here, and BE SAFE AND AVOID ACCIDENTS AND WEAR A HELMET!

WHEN Will I Receive My Economic Stimulus Payment from Uncle Sam?

This is a question I keep hearing from my clients!

It all depends on the last 2 digits of your social security number, whether you are registered to receive your refunds by snail mail or direct deposit to your bank account, and of course, you must have your tax return completed and not have filed for an extension on the deadline to file a tax return, as many do

Here is the skinny:

DIRECT DEPOSIT

Last two SSN digits: Payments will be transmitted no later than:
00 through 20......May 2
21 through 75......May 9
76 through 99......May 16

Paper checks will also go out based on Social Security number. For Social Security numbers ending in 00 through 09, the paper checks will be mailed starting May 9 and will continue through May 16. A similar process will be repeated in the following weeks.

PAPER CHECK

Last two SSN digits......Payments will be mailed no later than:
00 through 09......May 16
10 through 18......May 23
19 through 25......May 30
26 through 38......June 6
39 through 51......June 13
52 through 63......June 20
64 through 75......June 27
76 through 87......July 4
88 through 99......July 11

People who file a return after April 15 will receive their economic stimulus payment, but probably about two weeks later than the schedule shows. A return must be filed by Act. 15 in order to receive a stimulus payment this year. See the online calculator for an estimate of the amount you will receive.

ENJOY the mula you receive! Save it, spend it on something fun, or on gas and groceries. In this Spring of rising costs and recession, the money RETURNED from the government is better than money always headed in the OTHER direction!

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley

Omaha Motorcyclist Killed as Another Young Driver runs a Stop Sign

Another Sunday cruise ended tragically for an Omaha man, Gregory Teasley, was killed after broadside a pickup that failed to stop for a stop sign according to the Des Moines Register.

Was the driver on a cell hone? Textile? Looking at his Stereo. It is clear he wasn't looking at the big red stop sign in front of him, or even scanning the intersection he rolled through without stopping.

Pay attention as you drive! It is Spring, and motorcyclists, bicyclists and children are back on the roadways, and all deserve to legally be there without the negligent or reckless driving of those car or truck drivers who are SUPPOSED to be properly sharing the road with them.

Johnathon Dowd, 21, of Bondurant, Iowa, was later charged with the crime of vehicular homicide for this accident.

How NOT To Get In An Accident On Your Bicycle

I am an avid bicyclist, and I just came upon this great site on bicyle safety site that is worth a look-see:

http://bicyclesafe.com/

These some great and important safety lessons on this site, and I don't want you to be one of the over 1000 people that die in a bicycle accident each year, or one of the tens of thousand who are injured.

Remeber to wear a good helmet, good gloves, wear reflective or bright clothing, and consantly act LIKE YOU ARE INVISIBLE, and hoepfully you will never suffer the pain of a biycle accident when some driver is not paying attention or does not see you.

Have a GREAT 2008 iding season!

Will Radio Waves be THE Successful Cancer Cure or Treatment Some Day?

Might it be that a non-scientist, with no background in science or medicine or even a college degree, could help invent a cure for cancer?

CBS' 60 Minutes profiled John Kanzius this past Sunday. As improbable as it sounds, Kanzius and his radio wave machine is now the basis of leading research and testing at the University of Pittsburgh and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, in killing cancer cells.

The develpoment of this machine began after Kanzius' own diagnosis of leukemia some six years ago. Since then, he’s undergone 36 rounds of chemotherapy. The painful side effects of his treatment, and looking into the eyes of others who were themselves undergoing chemo pushed him into a search for a cure.

One sleepless night during his chemotherapy, Kanzius creatied a radio wave machine he built with his wife’s pots and pans. His laboratory is still in his garage. His machine sends radio waves from one source to another, and the question became how to focus the radio waves on a specific target in the body.

Mr. Kanzius spent $200,000 to build an bigger and stronger version of the machine with hopes of zapping a tumor with a focused beam of radio waves without destroying the surrounding cells. Kanzius has developed the machine and a business ThermMed LLC.

Kanzius shared his research with Dr. Steve Curley, a liver cancer doctor in Houston, who felt the machine was the most exciting cancer treatment he has seen in twenty years.

Doctors have built upon the research by Nobel laureate Richard Smalley into small cells called nanotubes that fit into cancer cells. Smalley was convinced nanotechnology would revolutionize cancer treatment before his death from cancer in October 2005.

So far this radio wave "cooking" of cancer cells has worked in rat testing. In another several years human trials will hoepfully begin.

What great news for hundreds of thousands of cancer patients, present and future!!
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Craig Kelley
